Women's Health
Women's health is rightly an important issue. Firstly the anatomy of women is much more complex than that of men and thus needs special mention. Secondly, since they are the mothers of our society and are responsible for giving birth to our future generation, they need special care. Then there are issues such as menstruation and menopause, which are unique to women and create an impact on both the physical and mental aspects of women's health.
On an average, 6 million women become pregnant every year in the US. Although maternal death figures have been down for several years now, many women are still affected by pregnancy related complications like hemorrhage, ectopic pregnancy, hypertension, infection and postpartum depression. Naturally, this has serious impact on the overall women's health. Maternal morbidity is still sadly around. What is it? It is the physical or psychological condition resulting from pregnancy that adversely affects woman's health. Maternal morbidity can lead even to hospitalization.
'Pregnancy Related Depression' is also quite common. According to figures, almost 13% of postpartum women experience this, which is really quite alarming. At the time when a newborn needs all the attention from the mother, if she is down with depression, this naturally has serious consequence on the baby as well. Complicating the problem is the fact that many women are not even aware of their state of depression and many who do indeed realize this, never consult a doctor because of social stigma. So the problem remains unattended.
Menopause is another condition that causes a serious impact on women's health. During menopause, the female body reduces the production of estrogen and progesterone hormones. This takes place when the woman is between 45 and 55 years old.
As women near menopause, most experience symptoms such as getting warm in the face, neck, or chest; night sweats or sleeping disorders; lack of energy; feeling stressed or tense; vaginal dryness; pain while having sex; thinning of bones and even severe weight loss.
